Chapter 10

We decided to divide and conquer. That was the only way we were going to figure out what was going on. Christmas was rapidly approaching, and we did not want to end up on Christmas Eve still not knowing who was behind all the maliciousness.

Moira and Uncle Charlie decided to take the postman and the real estate agent. Personally, I thought Uncle Charlie took the real estate agent so he could play a couple of rounds of golf.

"So, we all agree, what's important here isn't to have somebody arrested for some minor crimes, but to make them feel included in the community and cared for," I said.

The others nodded in agreement, and I reached behind me to grab the calendar off of the refrigerator. Setting it down in the center of the table, I took my highlighter and circled three different dates.

The others gave a nod of approval, letting me know they agreed with me. These three dates were some of the biggest Christmas events happening in town. They might also be targets for whoever was trying to disrupt Christmas.

The first one was the annual tree lighting, which was happening this evening. That meant we were going to have to act quickly.

The second event was one I personally loved; it was our annual boat parade. Local boat owners would decorate their yachts and fishing boats with holiday lights and decorations. Then there would be a flotilla down the main coastline where everybody would meet on the beach for an enormous bonfire to cheer the boats as they passed by.

The third date was Christmas Eve, and I hoped we wouldn't have to deal with any problems on this day. This was the day all the churches got together and had an evening service on the beach. It didn't matter what denomination you were; all were welcome to celebrate Christmas together.

"Right, well, we have three opportunities to get this under control. Hopefully, we can get it right on the first one," Uncle Charlie said.

"I think we should be at each of these events early so that we can discern where our suspects are and keep an eye on them. And Mac, that will also give you an opportunity to listen for voices,” Peter added.

"And in between each event, we need to concentrate on these four men and make sure they feel they are part of the community and loved," Moira said.

"I think the tree lot owner might have a difference of opinion," Peter mumbled.

Uncle Charlie grinned at him and waggled a finger to stop his thoughts. "I wouldn't worry about that. I'm good friends with him and I think I can convince Thomas that if whoever caused the damage to his trees intends to make restitution then no charges would need to be filed. After all, it is the time of year for forgiveness and fresh starts."

Moira beamed her smile at Uncle Charlie, pleased with his response. The last thing any of us wanted was to see one of these men go to jail.
